How to Empty a Drainable One-Piece Ostomy Pouch Without a Mess

Emptying a drainable one-piece ostomy pouch is part of everyday ostomy care. A few small habits may help make the process cleaner and reduce the chance of getting output on clothing or surrounding surfaces.

The key is to keep the process controlled: move clothing away, position the pouch carefully, empty slowly, clean the outlet, and close it securely.

1. Keep Clothing Away From the Pouch Outlet

Before opening the pouch, move clothing away from the outlet area.

You may find it helpful to:

  • Lift or secure your shirt
  • Lower the waistband slightly
  • Make sure the pouch outlet is completely clear of clothing

Taking a few seconds to prepare the area may help prevent accidental contact with clothing during emptying.

2. Position the Pouch Close to the Toilet

Once the clothing is out of the way, position the pouch outlet toward the toilet.

Keeping the outlet relatively close to the bowl may help reduce splashing.

Some people also place a small amount of toilet paper on the water surface before emptying. This may help reduce splashback.

Depending on what feels most comfortable, the pouch can often be emptied while sitting or standing.

3. Guide the Contents Out Slowly

Before opening the outlet completely, gently guide the pouch contents toward the bottom.

Try to use light downward pressure rather than squeezing the pouch quickly.

A slower, controlled emptying process may make it easier to manage the direction and flow of the contents.

A simple reminder is: Guide, rather than squeeze.

4. Wipe the Outlet From Inside to Outside

After emptying, focus on cleaning the pouch outlet rather than trying to clean the entire inside of the pouch.

Using toilet paper or another suitable wiping material:

  1. Gently wipe the inside edge of the outlet.
  2. Wipe the outside surface.
  3. Check the closure area for any remaining residue.

Cleaning the inside edge first may help avoid transferring residue back onto the outside of the pouch.

If the outlet design allows, gently opening or flattening the tail can make the area easier to wipe.

5. Close the Outlet and Check the Seal

Once the outlet looks clean, close the pouch according to its design.

For an integrated roll-up closure, roll the tail upward and fasten the closure as directed.

For a clip-style pouch, position the clip fully across the outlet before releasing the pouch.

Before adjusting your clothing, take a quick look to make sure the outlet is closed and sitting flat.

Checklist

For a drainable one-piece ostomy pouch, the goal is not to empty as quickly as possible. A more controlled routine may help reduce splashing, keep clothing cleaner, and make outlet cleaning easier.

Think of the process as: Control — Clean — Close

Individual routines may vary depending on pouch design, output consistency, mobility, and personal preference.
