How to Apply an Ostomy Barrier to Help Reduce Edge Leakage
A hydrocolloid barrier needs good contact with the skin to support a secure seal. Small details during application—such as skin preparation, alignment, and pressing the edges—may help reduce lifting or leakage around the barrier.
The process does not need to be complicated. A simple routine can be: Peel → Align → Apply → Press → Warm
1. Start With Clean, Dry Skin
Before applying the barrier, make sure the skin around the stoma is clean and dry.
Moisture, oil, or residue from skin products may affect how well the hydrocolloid adheres.
After cleaning, gently pat the skin dry before applying the pouch.
2. Peel the Release Liner Carefully
Remove the release liner without touching the adhesive surface more than necessary.
If the liner is large, peeling it away gradually may make the barrier easier to control and position.
Try to hold the barrier by the edges rather than pressing fingers directly onto the adhesive.
3. Align and Apply the Barrier
Center the opening around the stoma and gently place the barrier onto the skin.
A few things to check:
- Make sure the opening is not pressing tightly against the stoma.
- Avoid leaving an unnecessarily large gap around the stoma.
- Keep the abdomen in a natural, relaxed position while applying the barrier.
- Once positioned, avoid repeatedly lifting and repositioning the adhesive.
Then gently press the barrier into place.
4. Press Around the Stoma and Along the Edges
After the barrier is in place, gently press around the stoma first.
Then move your fingers around the outer edges of the barrier.
Pay extra attention to areas where the abdomen curves or where the edge tends to lift.
The goal is simply to help the hydrocolloid make even contact with the skin.
5. Use Hand Warmth to Help the Barrier Settle
Hydrocolloid materials can become softer with warmth.
After applying the pouch, place your hand over the barrier and hold gentle pressure for a short time.
This may help the barrier conform more closely to the abdominal surface, particularly around mild curves or uneven areas.
Check the Edges Before Moving On
Before adjusting clothing, take a quick look around the barrier.
Check for:
- Visible folds
- Lifted edges
- Small gaps
- Areas that do not appear fully attached
If an area does not sit flat, gently pressing it again may help.
Checklist
Applying a hydrocolloid barrier does not need to involve complicated techniques. Remember the five basic steps: Peel → Align → Apply → Press → Warm
Careful alignment, gentle pressure, and good skin contact may help the barrier sit more securely and reduce the chance of edge lifting.
