What is a calcium alginate dressing and what is its main purpose?

It is a soft fibrous dressing derived from natural seaweed. It offers high absorbency, turning into a soft gel upon contact with wound exudate to help maintain a moist healing environment, while the released calcium ions can assist in supporting blood coagulation.

Does this dressing require secondary fixation? How do I secure it?

Yes, this is a non-adhesive dressing and generally requires a secondary cover. After applying or packing it into the wound, you will need to secure it in place using medical tape, a transparent film dressing, or a bordered island gauze dressing.

Will it stick to the wound, and what wound types is it suitable for?

It features a non-adherent design. The gelling process helps minimize the risk of adhering to the wound bed, reducing trauma during removal. It is primarily suitable for moderate-to-highly exudative wounds (such as ulcers, pressure sores, and surgical sites) and is generally not advised for dry or minimally draining wounds.
