How to Prevent Ostomy Leaks
1. Ensure the Base Plate Fits Your Stoma Correctly
A secure fit starts with the opening of the base plate (wafer).
If it is too large, output can seep underneath; if too small, it may cause friction.
Tips:
- Measure your stoma regularly, as size can change over time
- Cut the opening so it matches the stoma’s exact shape
- Make sure no skin is exposed between the stoma and the wafer
A well-fitted wafer is the foundation of leak prevention.
2. Apply to Clean, Dry Skin
Moisture—sweat, water, or skin products—interferes with adhesive strength.
Best practice:
- Rinse with warm water only
- Pat the area completely dry
- Avoid lotions, oils, or alcohol-based products
- Allow the skin a few seconds to air-dry before applying the wafer
A clean surface ensures the adhesive bonds fully.
3. Address Skin Contours and Creases
Uneven skin can create channels where output sneaks under the base plate.
Common solutions include barrier rings, barrier strips, and paste:
- Barrier rings fill small gaps and improve the seal
- Barrier strips support the edges of the wafer and prevent lifting
- Paste fills narrow lines, folds, or scars where output can track
These accessories can significantly improve wear time, especially for soft abdomens or skin with dips and creases.
4. Support the Wafer During Application
Heat and gentle pressure help the adhesive set properly.
Try:
- Warming the wafer between your hands
- Holding your palm over the wafer for 30–60 seconds after applying
- Avoiding bending or twisting immediately afterward
A secure start helps maintain a good seal throughout the day.
5. Manage Output Flow and Pouch Weight
Thinner output and overfilled pouches are common causes of leaks.
Helpful habits:
- Empty the pouch when it is one-third full
- Monitor how output travels off the stoma
- Consider convexity if output consistently pools under the wafer
Keeping weight off the base plate reduces tugging and improves adhesion.
6. Be Proactive With Wear Time
Even the best adhesives break down over time.
Tips:
- Track your personal wear-time pattern
- Change proactively, not only when itching or lifting occurs
- Adjust frequency based on weather, activity, or sweat levels
Routine changes prevent surprises and protect the skin.
